What’s happening in fashion

From local artisans to top designers, Dublin is Ireland’s fashion capital. The compact city centre is also ideal for Dubliners and visitors who enjoy mastering the art of shopping. Some of the most famous and ground-breaking national and international designers are found in Dublin’s shops. One-of-a-kind creations and couture hang from racks in small specialty shops that sit side-by-side with major high street shops and department stores that carry leading fashion brands.

Grafton Street is at the centre of Dublin’s fashion scene. Mixed with shops and boutiques are buskers that bring poetry, dance and music to the city’s most popular shopping street.

Some of the most accomplished musicians and street performers that have entertained shoppers on Grafton Street have included Damien Rice, Academy Award-winner Glen Hansard, and Paddy Casey. Henry Street is Dublin’s other principal shopping district. The street runds from Liffey Street to the stylish Spire of Dublin, a fine example of the city’s designer spirit that is evident in architectural wonders found throughout the capital. The street is also the home of the Jervis Shopping Centre and the more budget-conscious Ilac Shopping Centre.

One of the city’s newest festivals is the Dublin Fashion Festival. Held each year in September, this celebration of style is an unforgettable event for fashionistas. Although not as famous as similar festivals in the fashion capitals of New York, Paris or London, the Dublin Fashion Festival is an interactive experience held in venues across the capital. It features on-street fashion shows throughout the city centre during the day, including opportunities for local designers to showcase their work. Guerrilla fashion shows are also held in bars and restaurants each night during the festival. Hotels and shops also host events during the festival, which includes special offers and demonstrations for festival-goers. All events are free, allowing shoppers and fashion enthusiasts to view and enjoy emerging and industry-leading designers at no cost.
