Still one of Dublin’s most popular attractions, Dublin Zoo opened in 1831. The third oldest zoo in the world, Dublin Zoo is also the largest zoo in Ireland. The 28-hectar (69-acre) zoo is located at Phoenix Park and is home to some 400 animals, including several rare species. In 1855, the zoo received its very first pair of lions. With food supplies dwindling during the Easter Rising in 1916, the lions were fed while other animals struggled in hunger. On March 20, 1927, Dublin Zoo welcomed the arrival of a new cub, Cairbre. Born in Dublin, the lion went on to become famous around the world as the mascot and logo of MGM Studios.
Starting in 1917, MGM has used a lion in the opening sequence of countless productions. Since 1957, “Leo” has been the face of MGM Studios. Like many other stars who have found their way to Hollywood, Cairbre changed his name with his arrival on the ‘silver screen’.
The seventh lion to appear on the MGM Studios logo, Cairbre was nicknamed “Leo the Lion” by MGM. Dublin’s “Leo” has roared at the start of the most MGM films in comparison to his six predecessors.
Filmgoers around the world have seen a Dubliner at the start of some of the most acclaimed and popular films of all time without realising it. Ben-Hur, Mutiny on the Bounty, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Skyfall, and countless of other films have begun with one of the city’s most famous sons. Cairbre himself also played key roles in a number of films, including Mike Henry’s Tarzan movies and the epic King of Kings.
