Music

Our music culture has taken the world by storm

Our lively music scene is world famous. With names such as U2, The Script, The Dubliners, The Frames, and many others, Dublin’s contribution to the world of music has been significant. From Phoenix Park to Glendalough, music is an integral part of the character of our fair city.

Throughout Dublin, you can hear the sounds of all types of music – traditional Irish music and folk tunes, rock and even heavy metal. Whether in Dublin’s inviting pubs or along scenic Grafton Street, our musical performers entertain patrons and passersby with the sounds of traditional and contemporary music and song. So rich is the city’s music scene that it was depicted in two films, The Commitments (1991) and Once (2006). Like so many of Dublin’s musicians, The Frames band member Glen Hansard began his career as a street performer in Dublin and also appeared in The Commitments. He also won an Academy Award for writing Once soundtrack song, ‘Falling Slowly’.

Of course, no discussion of Dublin music would be complete without mentioning U2, one of the world’s most recognised international bands.

Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 has released 12 studio albums and are one of the all-time best-selling musical artists in the world, with 22 Grammy Awards and countless of other accolades. U2 is just one Dublin band among many who have carried on our musical heritage, inspired by the city’s streets.
