Photography

A place for those with an eye for beauty

Photography is at the forefront of Dublin’s arts and culture mosaic. In fact, our city is at the centre of Ireland’s evolving modern visual arts revolution. In addition to vast collections housed within the National Library of Ireland, Dublin is also home to clubs and galleries dedicated to photography.

Our National Library Photographic Archive in Temple Bar features regular exhibitions showcasing the National Library of Ireland’s extensive photographic collection. The archive also features a reading room and approximately 4.5 million photographs, most of which feature Irish themes, taken by Irish photographers. All types of subjects are represented in the collections, including photographs of political and historical events, personal photographs, and studio portraits.

Dublin is also home to many of Ireland’s best known avant-garde and contemporary photographers, such as leading Irish photographers Kevin Abosch and Clare Langan.

Among Abosch’s most famous projects was a collection of 250 photographs with faces of Irish people. The artist has also photographed several of the world’s most famous faces, including Yoko Ono, Aung San Suu Kyi, Sinead O’Connor, Dustin Hoffman, Johnny Depp, Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, and many others. Langan’s innovative, experimental work, on the other hand, features eerie and ethereal landscapes.
